Forsaken is a first person shooter game that allowed the player six degrees of movement.
Created in 1998 by Probe Entertainment and published by Acclaim Entertainment, the game
was initially released for the PC and Sony Playstation. However, it was later ported to
the Nintendo 64 by the developement team Iguana UK under the name Forsaken 64. This port
of the game was my first introduction to the concept of three-dimentional movement within
the context of a shoot-em-up.
The gameplay consisted of the player choosing one of multiple mercenaries to go through the
missions that usually consisted of destroying all of the enemies or completing a few
objectives. The player had to keep an eye on their shields and the amount of energy
they had or they would end up exploding in a bloody mist and chunks of the player's
body.
There are 17 different characters to choose from, although not all are available at
the beginning. Each of the characters available have their own backstory that is
available at the character select screen before entering missions. For example, the
character Lokasenna. She is an agent of the secret society that calls
themselves PRO:BORG, which are obsessed with combining humans
with machines to bring upon the next evolutionary stage of mankind. When the
player is hit or is killed by enemies, the character will have a few lines.
Lokasenna will say random things about the world, or the difficulty
of the level being played
